Australia goes to the polls - even on Etsy!

Posted by Christiana (Tia) on Friday, August 20, 2010, In : Etsy Treasures and Favourites
Ok folks - it is election day here in Australia... apparently it is going to be a cliffhanger.
According to Etsy however Julia Gillard is clearly in front by 8 views - right now it stands 120/112 in favour of Julia.
Now you might be thinking - what on earth is Tia doing, looking for politicians on Etsy. Well, the truth is - I was looking for BUDGIES! And one of the results was this very Tony Abbott - ROFL! Aussies know the link between Budgies and Tony - no further explanation needed. The creat...

A visit to the RSCPA and DUSTY Dogs!

Posted by Christiana (Tia) on Friday, August 13, 2010, In : Etsy Treasures and Favourites
A few weeks ago I decided that I really wanted another canine fur baby. One that would hike with me in the bush, that wants to play with a frisbee or ball and is generally quite active in order to facilitate some rehabilitation for me.

Rosie, our resident QUEEN Dachshund,

is adorable, but - as most hounds go - she has her nose to the ground non-stop and we make very little progress when out and about, or she will run off after a rabbit and ignore my ball throwing efforts!

 She still gets a walk...

Rainbow Alert!

Posted by Christiana (Tia) on Wednesday, August 4, 2010, In : Etsy Treasures and Favourites
Here in Moonambel we have the Nature Channel on a BIG screen 24/7 - no remote control needed! With a variety of over 50 bird species, many more kangaroos (in fact - they outnumber the town population by 50:1), wallabies, echidnas, snakes and many domestic and farm animals (often on the loose too - grrr - just this morning I had a 17hh horse trot past my lounge room window and through the garden!) - but best of all - we get spectacular rainbows. Check this one out:

Isn't it just spectacular?...

Special Offer - 10% off - put the spring back into your step!

Posted by Christiana (Tia) on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, In : Wellness

Spring is just around the corner – uh oh – that was quick!

I don't know about you, but for me this winter went rather quickly and I can already see hints of spring approaching. There is a distinct scent in the air, a vibe around town, people are more cheerful, the greengrocers has more variety of fruit on offer and – the WEEDS are going crazy in the garden already.

Some of those weeds aren't really helpful for anything (known to us, anyway), others however are major contributers t...

Dedication to 'Paul' :)

Posted by Christiana (Tia) on Sunday, July 11, 2010,
Today's blog is dedicated to Paul... the incredible Octopus 'Oracle' in the Aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany.

Paul has correctly predicted the winner of any match the German team has played in this Wold Cup. How he does it can be seen here. To the right of the article is a link to the Video which shows Paul in action. On one occasion it is said that he really took his time to make up his mind, and kept everyone waiting for 45mins - but again - he was correct with the outcome.
My question is: Who...

Going Green lV - Fabrics

Posted by Christiana (Tia) on Saturday, July 3, 2010, In : Ecofriendly
Ok, it has been quite a while, life got in the way... seriously.
Some health issues needed attention first, but now I am back on deck - so to speak.

This is the last instalment of 'Going Green' with various ways of using fabrics - upcycling, recycling ... call it whatever way you like. If you are the 'second or subsequently' born of a larger family you might already be familiar with 'upcycled' clothing, perhaps your older sibling has worn some garments for several years before - with some alter...

Going Green III - Jewellery

Posted by Christiana (Tia) on Sunday, May 30, 2010, In : Ecofriendly
'Going green' also includes clothing, make-up, hair care and, of course, accessories.
Over the next few weeks I am going to look at the various options we have in each category, which should be a lot of fun.
Todays blog focusses on jewellery - we have some very exciting and impressive pieces made by the talented members of the Etsy DUST Team .

Below are three items that caught my eye:

This gorgeous pair of earrings is made by Full Spiral  who crafts adornments for the urban forest dweller. Ha...

Going Green II

Posted by Christiana (Tia) on Saturday, May 22, 2010, In : Ecofriendly
A couple of weeks ago I talked about various ways of 'going green' - making a contribution of sorts to reduce waste, recycle and re-use items.
Since then I have examined my own lifestyle even more closely to find more ways to make a difference. Our efforts so far are living 'off the grid', relying on solar power alone (with the occasional backup from the gennie), using rainwater, growing vegies, using only an absolute max of 23l of water per shower, actively recycle, take our own bags for shop...

For the Love of Turtles!

Posted by Christiana (Tia) on Monday, May 17, 2010, In : Etsy Treasures and Favourites
My first pet was a tortoise – Bumbi (named after a german cartoon character).
This sparked my lifelong passion and interest for these ancient land and water creatures (the water dwelling ones are commonly referred to as Turtles).
Four years ago I went to Hawaii for a weeklong drumming workshop – yes yes.... it is a hard life.
One day, while I was swimming (or more like 'floating') in the ocean, relaxing my mind and body, I suddenly felt something nudging me in the right shoulder!
The...

Going Green I

Posted by Christiana (Tia) on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, In : Ecofriendly
Going Green - it is almost a Buzzword or phrase these days! Most of us, by now, would have got the idea that refuse, reuse, recycle is one way of making a contribution to cutting down on waste, electrical power consumption, water etc. Sometimes even small steps make a big difference, after all - if we lead by example others are likely to follow - eventually. Human consciousness is starting to expand beyond CONSUMING - we are becoming more thoughtful and less wasteful.
Below are some very nifty...

48hours from now...

Posted by Christiana (Tia) on Monday, April 12, 2010, In : Travel
....we'll be firmly tucked into our seats on the plane, conquering the first leg of the trip to Amsterdam.
A brief stop in HK with just enough time to (maybe) have a shower and freshen up a bit, before it is time to board again.
Amsterdam at 6.35am is probably not at its most welcoming I'd imagine, but it'll have to do us.

The International Bookcrossing Convention starts on friday, so there is time to relax and acclimatize.
My suitcase is packet, naturally half of the weight accounts for books, b...

Autumn Warmers

Posted by Christiana (Tia) on Friday, April 9, 2010, In : Etsy Treasures and Favourites
Whatever happened to Autumn? Those milder, sunny days and cooler nights?
We got hit with a cold snap and suddenly I am scrambling to find the winter gear - some of which I had already packed into my suitcase, ready to head off to Amsterdam next week. While I was enjoying a hot cup of BUZZinga

I took a virtual stroll down Etsy's shopping mall in search of something warming and cozy - and came across this gorgeous snuggler, handmade by SagoOnTuesdays!

Another item that caught my eye was this  P...

Natural Hair Care

Posted by Christiana (Tia) on Monday, April 5, 2010, In : Herbs and Beauty
Often I get asked what I do for my Hair to get it looking the way it does now.
There is no secret to it, but what I have learnt is that the key lies with nourishment, not the kind of shampoo or conditioner I use. Hairdressers are trained to sell their stuff and will do anything to make you grab that extra bottle of serum, leave in conditioner or special care 'whatever'.
For a brief period I too got sucked into this spiel, but then the penny dropped.... it has to come from within.

My hair care re...
